Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Dashboard modules allow users to explore and interrogate their data, including registered rhinos, calf history, growth rate, summary tables, maps, and more.

Specifically, the Growth Rate module allows users to view plots showing Population Size and Growth Rate for a site, per year.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

  • Stable internet connection
  • S3 and Redshift/Database credentials

Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1

Select site.

Step 2

Click “View Growth Rate” to view two interactive plots:

On the left, a barplot shows the Population Size each year. Hover over the bars to view the number of individuals sighted for each year.

On the right, a scatterplot shows the Growth Rate over all years, with the line of best fit indicated by the red line.
Lambda (λ) is traditionally used by ecologists to specify annual population growth, and by definition is the finite population growth rate that gives the proportional change in population size from one time period to the next. When λ = 1, population is stable; λ > 1, population increases; λ < 1, population decreases. For instance, if λ = 1.20 the population is growing at a rate of 20%; if λ = 0.92 the population is declining at a rate of 8%.
Hover over the points to view lambda for each year.

Both plots are interactive, with buttons at the top right of each plot; click the “pan” button to move the plot around, the “box zoom” button to select an area of the plot to zoom to, the “wheel zoom” button to zoom in and out while scrolling, the “reset” button to reset the plot to the original parameters, and the “save” button to download a png file (not interactive) of the plot as it appears on the page.

Step 3

Click “Export Barplot” to download an interactive HTML file of the Population Size barplot diagram.

Step 4

Click “Export Scatterplot” to download an interactive HTML file of the Growth Rate scatterplot diagram.
