Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Dashboard modules allow users to explore and interrogate their data, including registered rhinos, calf history, growth rate, summary tables, maps, and more.

Specifically, the Evidence Heatmap tab of the Audit module allows users to track the status of a rhino over time by viewing events (birth, sightings (including notchings and immobilisations), translocation, and mortality) on a heatmap per year for one or more rhino/s, and showing all associated evidence images. Information such as age, sex, section, and capture history per rhino per year can also be exported.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

  • Stable internet connection
  • S3 and Redshift/Database credentials

Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1

Select site.

Step 2

Choose to specify a date range for the heatmap.
If “No”, select the “Years” for which to show (with an option for “All” years); if “Yes”, select specific dates to start and end the heatmap.
! Note: if selecting Years- more than one year must be selected.

Step 3

Select the Rhino name / Notch number / RhinoOMS ID you would like to see. You can select more than one.

Step 4

Click “View Heatmap”.

An interactive heatmap of all capture events will appear below, showing whether that year the specified rhino was born (-1), seen alive (1), translocated in (2), recovered dead due to poaching (3), recovered dead due to other causes (4), translocated out (5), or neither seen or recovered (6).
In the top right corner, use the additional buttons to download the heatmap as a png, zoom, pan, and reset the heatmap.

Step 5

Click on a cell of the heatmap to see all event evidence images for the specified rhino in that year. Reference image, evidence image, notching diagram, selected rhino name and year, and number of records will be shown below the heatmap.

Step 6

Click “Export Data” to export data associated with the rhino/s and year/s shown in the heatmap. Data are exported as csvs into your computer’s Downloads folder, and include:
-capture history (CH) per rhino per year (exactly as shown on the heatmap)
-age, in days, per rhino per year (calculated as number of days since birth date until the end of the given year)
-sex per rhino
-section the rhino was seen in at the last sighting of the given year
