The RhinoOMS Observations modules allow users to submit and validate rhino observation events.
Specifically, the Submit a mortality event tab in the Mortality/Submit module allows users to submit rhino mortalities.
To proceed, please ensure you have the following:
Enter Rhino information:
- Rhino name / Notch number / RhinoOMS ID
Enter spatial-temporal mortality information:
- Carcass Sighting Date
- Time Since Mortality (in hours)
- Mortality Date
- Site (will auto-fill based on the site of the registered rhino)
- Section (section within Site / sub-population)
- Longitude (X); must be in decimal degrees
- Latitude (Y); must be in decimal degrees
Click “Check Coordinates” to plot the mortality on the map, to check that the X and Y coordinates have been entered correctly.
Within the map, you can change the layers (change the background map, hide/show the Sites), measure distance and areas, and hide/show the inset map. Scroll to zoom in/out, and click and drag to move around the map.
Enter additional mortality details:
- Cause of Mortality (whether it was natural, poaching, management, or other)
- How Carcass Was Found
- Postmortem (whether a postmortem was conducted or not)
- Calf name / Notch number / RhinoOMS ID
Enter “Mortality Notes”.
Must include only alphanumeric characters (A-Z; 0-9), up to 255 characters.
Enter whether the “Skull [was] Collected”.
If no, specify why the skull was not collected.
If yes, specify the following:
- Destination Of Skull and Skull Tag
Enter whether the “Horns [were] Collected”.
If no, specify why the horns were not collected.
If yes, specify the following:
- Destination Of Anterior Horn and Anterior Horn Tag
- Anterior Horn information : Mass (in grams), Length (in millimeters) and Basal Circumference (in millimeters)
- Destination of Posterior Horn and Posterior Horn Tag
- Posterior Horn information : Mass (in grams), Length (in millimeters) and Basal Circumference (in millimeters)
Enter the Responsible Person/s (the email of the registered user who made the sighting)
Browse to one “Evidence Image” for the sighting.
This step is optional. Image must be a .JPG file.
Browse to any “Supporting Information” files for the sighting.
This step is optional. Multiple files can be uploaded. Files that can be uploaded include: .JPG, .JPEG, .PNG, .TIF, .TIFF, .PDF, .CSV
Click “Submit” to submit the sighting event to the online database.
