Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Observations modules allow users to submit and validate rhino observation events. All submitted events should be validated by another user to ensure data accuracy.

Specifically, the Mortality/Validate module allows users to check submitted rhino mortalities.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

  • Stable internet connection
  • S3 and Redshift/Database credentials

Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1

Specify RhinoOMS user (or ALL) who uploaded data. You have the option to view only records that require validation (default) or all records (Validated/Unvalidated). To view all records, click the check box Include validated records to see all approved and un-validated records a user has submitted per rhino. Click View data to view the records.

Step 2

Select records to validate by clicking on them in the table; multiple rows can be selected. To un-select a row, simply click on it again.

As with any table view in RhinoOMS, each column can be filtered and sorted, and columns can be hidden/un-hidden using the “Column visibility” button.

Step 3

Once records are selected, you can click Auto-validate selected data to view the results of formatting checks and/or click View selected evidence to view the associated evidence image/s.

In the “Validation results” pop-up, check the formatting of the coordinates, gender/s, and age/s, as well as the individual information (rhinoid, rhinoname, notchingnumber, and species) for the selected record/s. In the image viewer, examine the evidence image/s for the selected record/s. The mortalityid for each evidence image is shown under the image.

In the map, you can see the location/s of all loaded record/s. As with any map view in RhinoOMS, the map is interactive, so hovering over the map will show interactive information, the background map can be changed, features can be hidden/shown, distances and areas can be measured, and an inset map can be shown.

Step 4

Once the record/s have been investigated, add or change the evidence image if needed by clicking:
- Upload missing evidence = add or change the evidence with an file from your computer

Main evidence must be added before submission of evidence is allowed; the upload button will be enabled once main evidence is added (i.e.) supporting evidence cannot be uploaded on its own. When adding supporting evidence, select multiple files types all at once when browsing in the correct directory. Supporting evidence can be a PDF (e.g. veterinary report).

Step 5

Finally, approve or reject records by clicking one of the following buttons:
- Approve (without edits) = approves the selected record/s with no changes.
- Approve (pending edits) = allows the selected record/s to be edited (e.g. date, GPS, etc) and then approved in a pop-up window.
- Reject = rejects the selected record/s.
