Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Observations modules allow users to submit and validate rhino observation events.

Specifically, the Auto-extract metadata tab in the Sightings/Submit module allows users to extract metadata from sighting images in bulk.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

  • Stable internet connection
  • S3 and Redshift/Database credentials
  • Sighting image/s

Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1

Select the site and section for which you would like to upload sighting images.

Step 2

Browse to one or more sighting images. Each image will be considered a different sighting.
Image/s must be a .JPG file. Please wait for the images to load, indicated by the “Upload complete” message below the browse button.
(It is recommended to only upload 10 or less images at a time)

Step 3

Click “Extract Metadata” to extract metadata from the image/s and load a table of sighting/s information.

Within the table, some columns will be filled in from the image metadata (i.e. file name, sighting date, GPS coordinates) while others will be left blank for the user to fill in (i.e. rhinoid, estimated age, group size, sighting status, sighting source, responsible person, comments).
Note the sighting type is automatically set to Live Animal in this module. Also, estimated sex will be determined by the rhinoid.

Step 4

Next, edit information for the sightings in the table. Select sightings to update by clicking on them in the table; multiple rows can be selected. To un-select a row, simply click on it again. Any edits in the next step (including comments) will apply to all selected rows.
Click “Update Selected Records” to view a pop-up to edit the information.

Step 5

Within the “Update selected records” pop-up, choose the column to edit from the dropdown options. Click “Update” to update that column in the table in the pop-up. Remember, these edits will apply to all rows shown in the pop-up (selected for in the module by highlighting the rows). Continue to edit columns and click “Update” until the table in the pop-up is complete.

Once all columns are completed, the “Update” button will change to “Save”.

Step 6

Click “Save” in the pop-up to update the table in the module (edits aren’t saved to the online database yet).

Step 7

Complete Steps 4-6 until all sightings have all columns filled in.

Once all sightings in the table in the module have been completed, the “Update Selected Records” button will change to “Submit” to submit the sighting events to the online database.
