Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Observations modules allow users to submit and validate rhino observation events.

Specifically, the Submit a sighting event tab in the Sightings/Submit module allows users to submit rhino sightings.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

  • Stable internet connection
  • S3 and Redshift/Database credentials
  • Sighting event information


Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1

Enter Rhino information:
- Rhino name / Notch number / RhinoOMS ID
- Estimated Age (standardised age classes for Rhino monitoring;
      A: 0–3 months, B: 3–12 months, C: 1–2 years, D: 2–3.5 years, E: 3.5–7 years, and F: 7 years and older)

Step 2

Enter spatial-temporal sighting information:
- Sighting Date
- Site (will auto-fill based on the site of the registered rhino)
- Section (section within Site / sub-population)
- Longitude (X); must be in decimal degrees
- Latitude (Y); must be in decimal degrees

Click “Check Coordinates” to plot the sighting on the map, to check that the X and Y coordinates have been entered correctly.
Within the map, you can change the layers (change the background map, hide/show the Sites), measure distance and areas, and hide/show the inset map. Scroll to zoom in/out, and click and drag to move around the map.

Step 3

Enter additional sighting details:
- Group Size (number of rhinos)
- Sighting Status (whether it was a positive ID, incomplete ID, or unnotched individual)
- Source (whether the sighting was completed aerially, on patrol, or camera trap)
- Responsible Person/s (the email of the registered user who made the sighting)

Step 4

Enter “Sighting Notes”.
Must include only alphanumeric characters (A-Z; 0-9), up to 255 characters.

Step 5

Browse to one “Evidence Image” for the sighting.
This step is optional. Image must be a .JPG file.

Step 6

Browse to any “Supporting Information” files for the sighting.
This step is optional. Multiple files can be uploaded. Files that can be uploaded include: .JPG, .JPEG, .PNG, .TIF, .TIFF, .PDF, .CSV

Step 7

Click “Submit” to submit the sighting event to the online database.
