Module Information and Requirements

The RhinoOMS Add Rhino module allows users, with the requisite permissions, to upload new rhinos to the known population. No events a can be loaded onto the RhinoOMS system without the rhino being defined first as the RhinoOMS ID number is the unique key used for all analyses.

To proceed, please ensure you have the following:

Step-by-Step Guidelines

For uniquely identifiable rhinos

Step 1

Input the details of the new rhino into the boxes for each of the following values.

    • Rhino Code: A site specific code used to identify rhino. (This is often the historically used code or notch number, duplicates will be warned of but are accepted as the primary key for the system is already unique).
    • Rhino Name: The name given to the rhino (Duplicates are allowed, although we strongly suggest that names are unique if used in the field, and that calves are named as Mother-calf-Year until they have their own name. e.g. Xolani-calf-2007 or Notch 22-calf-2019)
    • Species: The species of the new rhino. Black rhino = Diceros bicornis, White Rhino = Ceratotherium simum.
    • Subspecies: The subspecies of the new rhino.
    • Site: Select the site from the drop-down list.
    • Section: Select the section where the new rhino is located from the drop-down list.
    • Date of Birth: Specify the estimated date of birth in the format yyyy/mm/dd. If the date of birth is not known accurately, for example if a newly found E or F class animal has been found, we suggest that the first of either January or June for the estimated year. This should be captured in the “Notes” as “Estimated DOB”.
    • Date First Seen: Specify the date of first detection yyyy/mm/dd.
    • Gender: Specify Male, Female or Unknown.
    • In population: Is the animal currently in the population?
    • At Mother’s Foot: Input if the animal is still associated with the mother or not.
    • Mother’s RhinoOMS ID: This is the RhinoOMS ID for the mother, taken from the Registered Rhinos tab.

    • Notes: Add any notes that may be relevant to this rhino. For example, state that it has natural tears or a particular horn shape.

    • Choose Approved Image For Upload (.JPG):

Click Add Rhinos

Step 3

Ensure the upload is successful. Four green boxes should appear to confirm successful upload of data.
